How to make barrier masks:
We chose this type of pleated barrier mask because it is quick and easy to sew, even for people new to sewing. It is intended for domestic and artisanal manufacturing as recommended by AFNOR with 2 or 3 thicknesses of tight cotton fabrics depending of the version choosen (2 or 3 layers). The design consists of the assembly of 2 pieces of cotton fabric of 20 x 19.50 cm, in a simple folding, fixed by a seam and the installation of elastic (2 times 17 to 20 cm depending on the size and shape of your mask).
We found Elsa Couture's video tutorial simple but clear on the steps to create your mask that you will find here
will help you make your mask more easily and quicky.
When to wear your mask and for how long:
It is a non-medical device that can be worn when you are close to other people, for example when you go shopping for authorized basic necessities or on your way to your workplace.
The barrier mask makes it possible to prevent possible penetration of the virus through the nose and mouth of its user and to protect these areas of the face with his hands.
We remind you that wearing a mask complements the barrier gestures and does not exempt you from applying the recommended barrier gestures. The wearing of the mask is limited to 4 hours, after this period its effectiveness is no longer optimal, it will be necessary to wear another and wash the previous one. This is also the case when you feel a feeling of humidity even if the mask has been worn for less than 4 hours.
How to wash and maintain the masks.
The mask, after being soiled or worn for more than 4 hours, must be washed at 60 ° C, always according to AFNOR recommendations. This is why we have provided a kit of 24 barrier masks, because you will have to make frequent changes. thus you will gain autonomy and will be able to group washes. Although the fabrics can be washed at 60 ° C, the intensive frequency of washes necessary for its use will prematurely degrade the intensity of the colors. Masks should be washed before first use.
As the AFNOR document indicates, these hand-made folded barrier masks that you will assemble have not been subject to conformity assessment by certified bodies or laboratories. The design and manufacturing according to the rules of the art, and quality control therefore remains the responsibility of the one who manufactures it.
